First steps when someone passes

For a passing in hospital: the hospital staff will get in touch with the next of kin and make sure that the Medical Certificate of cause of death is signed by a qualified doctor


For a passing at home: the first step is to contact the doctor of the person, who will know what to do regarding attending to the deceased. Once they are finished, they will let you know that it is time to contact us, and we will arrange for the deceased to be taken care of at the place where they passed away


For a passing in a nursing home: the staff of the nursing home will be experienced in this situation and will arrange for the doctor and funeral director to attend for you. You will therefore need to let the nursing home know in advance if you specifically wish for us to be the appointed funeral director

Registering a death

When someone passes away, their death must be registered with the authorities within 5 days of it taking place. This is a legal requirement and is carried out by making an appointment with the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, taking the doctor's certificate stating the cause of death to the appointment. They will require the information below:


  • date and location of death

  • full name of the deceased (including maiden name where applicable)

  • date and place of birth

  • home address of the deceased

  • occupation of the deceased

  • full name and occupation of the spouse or civil partner

  • date of birth of the civil partner

  • whether the deceased was receiving a pension or allowance from public funds


If you can, bring the medical card and birth certificate of the deceased; this is not essential but will help the process. The Registrar will give you a green certificate, which is a notice for burial or cremation. Pass this on to the funeral director to get started on the funeral planning process. You might like to take the opportunity to get multiple copies of the death certificate from the registrar, as they will be necessary for several other administrative tasks such as:


  • probate and letters of administration

  • bank and building society arrangements

  • administration of insurance policies covering the deceased

  • administration of stocks or shares held by the deceased


In the unlikely event that the cause of death cannot be determined by the doctor, he will refer the case to the HM Coroner. You will be notified of this development and the subsequent steps by the Coroner

Depending on your circumstances, there may be funding support opportunities for you to help cover the funeral costs. If you or your partner are receiving any of the following benefits, you may be able to receive funding assistance:

Consulting a solicitor

After someone passes away, probate is the first step in carrying out the formalities regarding the deceased person's will, estate and outstanding debts. Probate is a document which, among other things, designates the person who will carry out the settlement of these issues. Your local probate office or a solicitor will be able to help you make the first steps to obtain probate; we are also happy to advise you on this


Generally, you will benefit from the guidance of a solicitor during these processes following a death. If the deceased was using a solicitor before their passing, it is important to contact that person to find out if the deceased had made arrangements for the situation at hand. Either working with this solicitor or your own, you will receive useful guidance and authoritative input on the administration of the legal obligations following death, the probate, and the settlement of debts and testaments. It is extremely helpful in terms of relieving yourself of stressful responsibilities, and could even save you money
